Monte Loos & Bill Duhamel

Both Bill & Monte have contributed greatly as individuals to their profession and their community. And throughout their careers, they worked together on common objectives that enhanced broadcast journalism for their staff and audience members.
Monte has given our industry nearly fifty years of service as the Director of Operations for Duhamel Broadcasting. In addition to his job duties, he served as a teacher and mentor to many employees in the industry. He helped set a standard of excellence for his staff and for those he interacted with professionally. On a state level he now provides his expertise to South Dakota broadcasters through the Alternative Broadcast Inspection Program and has served many years on the Executive Board of the South Dakota Broadcasters Association. On the national level, Monte continues to represent the SDBA as Legislative Liaison at the National Association of Broadcasters’ annual visits to congress. This year, he was elected to serve on the NAB Radio Board of Directors. Monte also represents his company and his industry well in the community. In addition to his past service to the Boy Scouts, the United Way and Optimist International, he is currently the Chairman of the Board of the Rapid City Library, a member of his church’s choir, board of trustees and building committee, and serves on the board of The Club for Boys in Rapid City.
Duhamel Broadcasting Enterprises, under the leadership of Bill Duhamel, operates KOTA TV in Rapid City and three full-power satellite stations serving a three state area. Duhamel Broadcasting also operates four radio stations serving communities in the Black Hills. Although Bill has a Ph.D in Management Science and once was a college professor, he never forgot his first job as a late-night disc jockey in Rapid City. He returned to broadcasting in 1967 and quickly became an industry leader locally, statewide and nationally. He has served on the NAB Television Board of Directors, the ABC and CBS affiliate’s board and many other numerous boards and associations. He even had a stint as President of the SDBA. Bill has been the Chairman of the Rapid City Area Chamber and the SD Health Authority Board. He’s also been on the boards of the Rapid City Regional Hospital, Mount Marty College, St. Martin’s Academy, Rotary, RC Community Health Center, the Rural Ethnic Institute, the Finance Committee of Red Cloud Indian School, and numerous other community groups.
Throughout their careers, both Monte & Bill consistently provided their staff members with the equipment, the expertise, the motivation and the freedom to provide excellent news and public affairs coverage to their market. They realize the importance of their station and its programming in the community. The Committee members feel William Duhamel and Monte Loos have spent their careers exemplifying the standards of excellence recognized by the Tom Brokaw Award.
